If you’re driving along Highway 7 on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore and suddenly find yourself slowing down, squinting at a house that seems to be alive with color and characters, you’ve found it. You’ve found Barry’s World.
Barry Colpitts is a self-taught woodcarver and folk artist from East Ship Harbour, Nova Scotia, and his two-acre property is one of the most joyful and surprising places you’ll encounter in Atlantic Canada. Every surface tells a story. The house, the barn, the shed, the fence, the railings, the car, the truck, even the mailbox have all been transformed by his hand into something that defies easy description.
He didn’t set out to become an artist. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Barry worked a long string of jobs over the years, cutting meat, working construction, guarding inmates at a jail in Sackville. It was there, in the 1980s, needing something to calm his nerves, that he picked up a knife and started carving. He remembered watching his uncle Fred carve ox yokes as a boy, and figured he’d give it a try.
He was never planning to sell. He just put the pieces around his yard and on his house because it felt right. Then a persistent stranger kept showing up, asking to buy something. Barry finally named a price of fifty dollars, fully expecting to be turned away. The man said yes, took everything Barry had, and kept coming back for more. A career was born, reluctantly and wonderfully.
His tools are simple: a chainsaw and a crooked knife. His palette is bold boat paint in high-gloss primary colors, because as Barry himself puts it, “bright colors make me feel good. Nothing else looks right.” His subjects range from mermaids and fishermen to saints and sinners, birds and roosters, angels and the devil, all rendered with a directness and humor that feels entirely his own. Many pieces are portraits of people he knows, his wife Betty Ann, his son Craig, neighbors, friends, his uncle carved in his Mountie’s suit, even his mother as she was pregnant with Barry.
The work is deeply personal, rooted in faith, community, and place. His religious convictions show up in crosses and angels, and his take on the seven deadly sins is characteristically straightforward: wanting other people’s stuff, eating too frigging much, looking too hard at someone else’s wife.
Over the decades, Barry’s work has found its way into serious institutional collections including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Beaverbrook Gallery in New Brunswick, and the Canadian Museum of History. In early 2025, he was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his significant contribution to Canadian culture. His response was pure Barry: “It’s nice, but it makes me nervous. Getting too much attention makes me nervous.”
He still sells from the shed behind his house. He still doesn’t use a computer. And during tourist season, five or six people a day stop by and stay for an hour or more, because once you step into Barry’s World, it’s hard to leave.
