Melanie Stimmell "Virtues in Velvet & Crystal Crowns"

Solo Exhibition

Virtues in Velvet and Crystal Crowns is a collection of intimate portraits and symbolic objects exploring the quiet virtues that shape human connection yet often remain unseen. Rooted in baroque ornamentation and surreal narrative portraiture, the works depict feminine figures adorned in velvet and crystalline regalia — visual metaphors for emotional architecture rather than status.

Companion creatures appear throughout the collection as gentle witnesses and guardians of virtue. Birds, sloths, and chinchillas inhabit the space of the portraits as emissaries of intention, patience, and quiet companionship, reinforcing the collection’s exploration of softness as strength.

Rendered across soft pastel, oil, and sculptural medallion formats, the works invite viewers into a poetic court where ornament becomes language and regalia becomes presence. These figures exist between myth and memory, proposing a reimagined adornment in which empathy, attentiveness, and unseen care become the most luminous forms of crown.
