Lacey Slatten: Art, Growth, and Coastal Inspiration

Where Are You From?

Savannah, Georgia

Where do you long to live (reality or fantasy)?

Right where I am! Coastal Georgia is captivating and stunning.

What started you on your journey into art professionally?

My dad found some old boxes from my childhood and college days, and they were filled with so much of my art. Some of it was actually pretty good! It made me wish I had the confidence I have now, but with the skills I had back then. A close friend gave me a pep talk, and next thing I knew, I was back in a ceramics class. On the very first day, the owner and I hit it off—we discovered we went to the same school and had the same professors, so I instantly felt at home in that studio. That space really helped spark my creativity again, reminding me of old techniques while also pushing me to try new things. Every year since, I’ve continued to grow both as an artist and professionally and creatively.

How has your art changed and evolved over the years?

Freedom! When I was younger, creating felt constrained—there was always pressure for my work to fit a particular style or to be liked by others. Now, I create for myself and for the personal fulfillment it brings. If my work resonates with others, if it makes them pause, think, or feel something, that in itself is meaningful to me.

If your artwork could come to life and interact with you, what kind of conversation would you have with it?

I imagine my life and art unfolding by the marsh, where the textures and surfaces of the coast are always sparking my inspiration. Every moment offers something new—whether it’s a flock of roseate spoonbills at low tide, a raccoon darting up a tree, or the quiet glide of an alligator leaving ripples on the water’s surface. It’s a constant dance of nature, captivating in its simplicity. I am filled with gratitude every day that I get to witness it in real life and in my art.

What is the one statement you could give to your younger self that you would give anything to go back and relay to them at a pivotal moment?

Never lose that fearless ambition. Comparison only limits you.

In what ways do you think your personal experiences and emotions shape the way you connect with your work?

I understand how lucky I am to have freedom to create, play, and just enjoy myself in the making process.

What is the most unexpected thing to occur with your work through the years that shifted your perspective in a way you never anticipated?

The most surprising thing is that people truly get me—they understand my vision and support what I love to create.

Have you ever imagined your art as a time capsule—what do you think future generations would think of it?

Wild thing is I probably have some childhood art in a time capsule in Ohio. They loved a time capsule in the early 90s lol. But seriously, I hope that future generations get to experience coastal Georgia and the marshlands the way I have and depict in my art. But, with shore erosion, coastal developments, and more, this is not a given. I hope my art depicts the peace, purity, wildness, and my deep gratitude for this place and time I get to be here.

What advice would you give an artist starting out (young or at any age) who wants to do it professionally?

We all start with a blank canvas, and the world is eager to see what you want to share. Use your talent to reveal the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful in your authentic way through your art. Stay consistent in your growth as an artist, seek out like-minded creatives from different fields to build a community, and put yourself out there, again and again. In doing so, you’ll find your place, exactly as you are.

We have a thing for oversharing...
