Statement: I focused on an idea from Phillip Pullman in his His Dark Materials trilogy where we are born with our Death and Death follows us throughout our lives waiting to guide us to the next realm when it is our turn. Here the poppies the girl is holding are a direct association with death and grief, while the butterfly is a symbol of transition. The black cat is also a symbol of Death, and one that is also a companion.
