Victorian superstitions and folklore, particularly in the Highlands of Scotland, included beliefs about the Cat Síth (Cat Sidhe in Gaelic). Some folklore from this era suggested that the Cat Sidhe was a soul-stealing witch who could transform into a large fairy cat. Witches who can transform into cats up to nine times. If they transform the ninth time, they remain permanently in cat form, possibly influencing the idea of cats having nine lives.
