Egg Tempera and Water Gilding on Poplar Wood
Art: 9.5″ x 14.2″ Diptych
Ovest / Est (West /East in English) is an unconventional self portrait. The two lambs symbolize the ancient sheep farming vocation of my home village, Scalvaia, a tiny group of houses rooted in one of the most wild parts of Siena province, which was on the way of transhumance towards Maremma plains during the Middle Ages and the Modern era. Looking towards West from my village, we can see Monte Alto, while looking toward East we can spot Monte Quoio, and these are the two landscapes represented in the lambs’ halos. I decided to use gold in the background, instead of in halos, because this is not a religious painting, but symbolizes my spiritual connection with my homeland.
