Scratchboard Cutout Sculpture, Approximately 28 Individually Scratched, Cut, Sanded, Painted and Assembled Pieces.
Art: 10″ x 9″
All of my grandparents were Russian Mennonites (Dutch and German in origin but lived in Ukraine/Russia for 150-ish years before resettling in Canada). Because religion is so integral to the culture, and because the mennonites have moved around and lived in so many different places, I have grappled with my own cultural identity as I seek meaning separate from the religious component. In recent years, I’ve been drawn to the elements of mennonite culture and have incorporated it frequently in my work.

Both of my pieces feature prairie weasels dressed in traditional mennonite / farmer clothing. They are surrounded by doves, quilts, olive branches, eggs, with several of the items scratched in a unique folk art style as a nod to Mennonite Fraktur. Mennonite food and culture pulls from the different regions that they have inhabited so the items I feature can be a bit of an eclectic mix!

This scratchboard sculpture features approximately 28 individually scratched, cut, sanded, painted and assembled pieces.
