Why Tagging and DMing Galleries and Magazines Doesn’t Work (And What to Do Instead)

So many artists want to be seen – they will do almost anything and that includes shooting the opportunities right in the foot.

If you’re an artist trying to get noticed by galleries and magazines, you’ve probably been tempted to tag them in your Instagram posts or send a DM with images or your website saying “take a look”.

It seems logical, right? Get your work in front of the right people, catch their eye, land an opportunity.

The hard truth it that it doesn’t work. And it might actually be working against you. Well actually, it is 100% working agaist you.

The Problem That Is Created

Galleries and publications get tagged in hundreds of posts every week. Your notification gets lost in the noise and ignored. Worse yet, is that it signals that you haven’t bothered to learn how the industry actually works an that is not how it works.

The same goes for unsolicited DMs with 5-10 images saying “check out my work.” Gallery directors and editors receive these constantly. They don’t look at them and often block the artist.

When Tagging and DMs Are Actually Okay
Only tag or DM when:

  • The gallery or publication has an official hashtag for submissions
  • You’re currently exhibiting or featured there
  • They’ve posted a specific call inviting tags or direct messages
  • You have an existing relationship or prior communication

How the Industry Actually Works

Galleries and publications have established submission processes for a reason. They need to review work systematically, on their own schedule, and according to their specific needs.

Most galleries and magazines have submission guidelines on their website that tell you:

  • When they review new work (many only accept submissions during specific windows)
  • What format they want (number of images, file size, artist statement length)
  • How to send it (email address, online portal, or physical mail)
  • What information to include (CV, artist statement, exhibition history)
  • Response timeline (some take weeks or months to review)

Following these guidelines shows you’re professional and serious about your work. It also means your submission actually gets seen and considered properly, rather than lost in a social media notification flood.

What Actually Works

Submit properly.

Find the gallery or publication’s submission page. Read their guidelines carefully. Prepare your materials according to their specifications. Send your work through their official channel. Be patient.

Engage thoughtfully.

Follow galleries and magazines you genuinely admire. Engage with their content and their artists’ work in meaningful ways. Don’t spam “wow” or “nice”—make an effort to show real interest. Comment on what specifically resonates with you about an exhibition or an artist’s approach. Show up to openings when you can. Build genuine relationships over time.
This kind of authentic engagement gets you noticed as someone who’s genuinely part of the community, not just looking for a quick opportunity.

Stop tagging and DMing cold. Start submitting properly and engaging authentically. That’s how real opportunities happen.
